In every coaching conversation, something more than words is at play. Beyond the client’s agenda and our chosen approach, subtle shifts of energy, emotion and unspoken meaning unfold between coach and client. These live dynamics, sometimes fleeting, sometimes intense, can unlock powerful insights when a coach is ready to notice and work with them.

Coaching in Real Time is a two-part CPD series designed for coaches who want to deepen their ability to work with what is emerging in the moment. By focusing on presence, emotion and the coach’s own self-awareness, the series explores how to respond to what is really happening, rather than what was planned or expected.

Why these themes matter

When we as coaches can stay fully present, we gain access to the richest source of information available: the immediate, lived experience of the coaching relationship itself. Subtle cues—a shift in tone, a sudden silence, an unexpected feeling—often signal important underlying beliefs or patterns. Working skilfully with these dynamics can help clients see themselves more clearly and make lasting change.

An essential part of this work is understanding transference and counter-transference. These occur when feelings, expectations or relational patterns from other parts of life surface in the coaching space. Transference refers to what the client brings; counter-transference is the coach’s emotional response. Learning to notice and separate these layers allows the coach to respond with clarity and to use what emerges as a resource rather than a distraction.

Two connected sessions

Part 1 – Working with the Here and Now
Thursday 30 October 2025, 6–7.30 pm (UK time)

The first session explores how to stay present and work with what is happening as it happens. Participants will learn how to notice shifts in energy, emotion and body language; how to respond in the moment; and how to use real-time awareness to guide meaningful dialogue. Practical techniques and watch-outs help coaches work safely with strong emotions—both their own and their clients’—while keeping the conversation focused and constructive.

Part 2 – Use of Self
Thursday 13 November 2025, 6–7.30 pm (UK time)

The second session focuses on the coach as an instrument of change. Participants examine how their own feelings, intuitions and reactions can illuminate what is happening for the client. Through the lens of transference and counter-transference, the session offers strategies to distinguish what belongs to the coach from what originates with the client, and how to bring these insights into the conversation in a way that serves growth.
