Coaching Skills for Teachers and Educators

Within education, coaching is being increasingly adopted as a way of supporting the development and potential of both academic and non-academic staff. As well as being of immense benefit as a complementary form of communication, coaching also aids relationship building and engagement with students in order to support their academic and personal development as well as their well-being. More and more, schools and educators are turning to coaching as a significant ingredient in the cultivation of a nurturing and stimulating educational culture.

What is Coaching Skills for Teachers and Educators?

Coaching Skills for Teachers and Educators is a coaching skills training course developed specifically for teachers and educators. It goes deeper than a quick one or two day’s training, but isn’t as time and resource intensive as a full accredited coaching education programme.

This course consists of a one-hour virtual kickoff session, followed by three face-to-face days spaced out in 4-6 week intervals. This not only accommodates educators’ busy schedules, but also gives an opportunity for you to put into practice what you’ve learned.

What are the benefits of this course?

Coaching Skills for Teachers and Educators is the first big step on the ICF ACC credential pathway. Whilst it is a valuable standalone programme that equips educators to add more value to their school, it also is the first of three modules of our ICF Level 1 Science and Art of Coaching programme. Participants can thus, if they wish, continue to take two subsequent modules to complete the training element of the full ACC Credential application pathway.

Additionally, participants will have the skills and self-confidence to deliver coaching sessions, share introductory coaching skills with their colleagues, and usefully apply coaching skills inside and outside the classroom.

The material this course is based upon has been accredited by the International Coaching Federation.

Who delivers the training?

Coaching Skills for Teachers and Educators was designed by Tracy Sinclair, MCC and is delivered by Tracy and Kim Wells, ACC.

Tracy Sinclair is co-founder and CEO of Coach Advancement by Tracy Sinclair. She co-authored Becoming a Coach: The Essential ICF Guide (2020) and hosts the Coaching in Conversation podcast. Tracy is dedicated to the development of the coaching profession and the coaching community and has served in both local and global boards and work groups for the International Coaching Federation, including ICF Global Board Chair in 2018. She was also named one of the Leading Global Coaches of the Thinkers50 Marshall Goldsmith Coaching Awards (2019, 2021) and was a finalist for the Thinkers50 Coaching and Mentoring Award (2021). She is also a member of the Marshall Goldsmith 100Coaches and a trained coaching supervisor, mentor coach and ICF assessor.

Kim Wells is Director of Training and Research at Caterham School. He has been teaching for 27 years and runs all coaching training for both HMC (The Heads Conference of over 350 leading independent schools in the UK and abroad), and for ISTIP (the Independent Schools Teacher Induction Panel) who support Subject Mentors and Professional Tutors of Early Careers Teachers. He has delivered training to more than 100 schools in the UK and Europe to date, and has spoken at numerous conferences (including HMC and GSA) about coaching and pedagogy. Kim qualified as an Executive Level 7 Coach with the Institute of Leadership & Management in 2016, and as an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) with the International Coaching Federation in 2020.

“I felt that I was getting something from the best. And that was validated from some of the things that they talked about, but also their experiences and qualifications from the International Coaching Federation. There was a real rigor about the framework and a sense of accountability.”

Ronnie Reading, Deputy Head Educational Development, Abingdon School

“It’s one thing finding out about the Grow Model and using that as a framework or a methodology, but it’s everything underneath that. You as a human being are the medium through which you’re applying a coaching model. So you have to be aware of your biases and how they are playing out in your role as a coach. And that’s what the course gives you.”

Fiona Allen, Deputy Head, St. Benedict's School
