Coaching in Real Time: What’s Emerging, Emotion, and Self as Tools
Virtual CPD Programme
This two-part series explores essential themes related to coaching in real time. Each session stands alone, offering valuable insights on its own, while together they provide a deep and comprehensive exploration of the key issues that shape coaching in this area.
Working with the Here and Now
Thursday 30 October 2025, 6 – 7.30 pm (London time)
Programme Outline
What really happens in the space between a coach and a client?
Not the agenda, not the tools — but what’s unfolding moment by moment, in the now?
In this session, we’ll explore what it means to coach in the here and now — noticing emotions, shifts, and dynamics as they arise, and using that awareness to guide more impactful conversations. You’ll gain practical techniques to stay present, work skilfully with strong emotions, and respond to what’s really happening — not just what’s planned.
Programme Objectives
Exploring real-life coaching examples, our takeaways will be:
- What ‘Working in the Here and Now’ means: How presence unlocks new awareness, perspectives and insights.
- The benefits of using the ‘Here and Now’: Learn how focusing on the present moment can help clients achieve their goals more effectively by addressing underlying emotions, beliefs, impact and actions as they arise.
- Practical tips, techniques and watchouts: Actionable strategies for staying attuned to the present, and using what you see and experience when you’re with the client, whilst managing potential challenges.
- Working with strong emotions (yours and your client’s): Discover ways to skilfully work with heightened emotions in a way that’s safe, constructive, and empowering.
- Linking to coaching competencies: We’ll connect these practices to the core coaching competencies, demonstrating how staying present supports ethical, powerful coaching.
- Next steps: On integrating this approach into your practice.
Use of Self in Coaching
Thursday 13 November 2025, 6 – 7.30 pm (London time)
Programme Outline
Have you ever found yourself feeling stuck, bored, or overly nurturing during a coaching session? Did you wonder if it was just you? These feelings may reveal something important about how your client engages with others or the impact they have on those around them. By working in the here and now, we can bring these dynamics to the surface and skilfully explore them with the client for deeper, longer-lasting change.
This 90-minute session, designed for coaches, focuses on Working with the Use of Self and how to use your own presence and awareness to support clients in more profound ways.
Programme Objectives
Exploring real-life coaching examples, our takeaways will be:
- What working with the Use of Self means: How staying present helps you recognise and respond to subtle dynamics as they arise in the moment.
Transference and counter-transference: What they mean, how they can show up consciously and unconsciously in coaching, and how to apply them productively. - Distinguishing between our “stuff” and theirs: Understand how to recognise and separate your own reactions from what’s truly coming from the clients, and prevent your ‘stuff’ getting in the way.
- The power of the Use of Self: Learn how to use your authentic presence, emotions, and intuition during sessions to help clients achieve their goals.
- Tips and techniques to use your Self: Gain practical strategies on how to decide whether to raise this with a client, and ways to do so sensitively and safely.
- Using real-life coaching examples: See how the Use of Self has been applied in actual coaching scenarios to bring about change.
- Further support and watchouts: Identify areas for continued growth and development, as well as potential challenges to be mindful of when using yourself as a coaching tool.
- Linking to coaching competencies: Explore how these practices align with key coaching competencies like building trust, active listening, and fostering client awareness.
- How Use of Self links to working in the Here and Now: Discover the connection between being fully present with your client and using your own self-awareness as a tool.
Programme Format
Both sessions are 90-minute interactive session working with live examples from the participants as well as input from the tutor.
